Replacing a tank-toilet seal with three screws
If your toilet is leaking between the tank and the bowl, then you probably need to replace the seal. While many toilets use two bolts to hold the tank and bowl together, some toilets use three bolts. The fasteners are arranged in a triangle and must be removed before you can remove the tank and replace the leaking gasket.
Turn off the water supply to the toilet by turning the valve on the floor next to the toilet bowl. Use a wrench to loosen and remove the toilet supply line from the valve to the toilet.
Remove the lid of the tank and look inside. Locate the three screws arranged in a triangle on the bottom of the tank. Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove them.
Lift the tank off the toilet bowl. Tip it into the tub or sink to drain the remaining water. Lay the tank on its side so you can access the gasket.
Pull the gasket off the tank. Use pliers to loosen it if necessary. Wipe the tank around the gasket hole with a clean cloth to remove any debris or residue.
Press a new gasket into the hole. Lift the tank back up and center the gasket hole on the toilet bowl. Align the bolt holes and lower the tank back into place.
Slide the three bolts back through the tank and screw the washers and nuts onto the bottoms. Tighten them back up, reconnect the water line, turn on the water, and refill the toilet. Flush the toilet to check for leaks.
Replacing the toilet tank washers
Most toilets consist of two parts: the bowl and the tank, which stores water until the toilet is flushed. The tank is attached to the bowl with two bolts. The bolts protrude through the bottom of the tank and through flange holes on the top of the bowl and are secured with washers and nuts. The bolts have fiber or rubber washers that prevent water from leaking out of the tank. Over time, the washers become hard and brittle, causing slow drips or leaks. Replace the washers and the nuts and bolts to get the toilet working properly again.
Turn off the water supply valve and flush the toilet
Place old towels under the tank to catch any remaining water in the tank. Loosen the slotted screws on the bottom of the tank; they are located on the left and right sides. You may need to hold the head of the nut on the underside of the toilet bowl rim with an adjustable wrench.
Remove the old bolt, nut, metal washer and rubber washer from the tank.
